The 51视频 at Lafayette will host the 2008 X-treme Spring Break for college students who want to continue the work in hurricane-ravaged areas along with Gulf Coast. The event will start March 24 and continue to March 29.
X-treme Spring Break is a UL System initiative that started in 2006 with McNeese State University and Southeastern Louisiana University. In 2007, it was hosted by Nicholls State University. The project is funded through a 鈥淯LS Serves鈥 Learn and Serve America grant.
More than 175 students from colleges and universities across the state have volunteered since 2006, assisting Habitat for Humanity in building homes in the hurricane-affected Gulf Coast region. Students have also attended hurricane and service related presentations and optional training programs.
This year, volunteers will help Habitat for Humanity while also participating in discussion groups about their service learning experience, public health and safety, emergency preparedness and response and civic development among other topics.
Participants will be housed in Bourgeois Hall and will need to bring pillows, towels and sleeping bags. Lockers will be provided to store personal items, but students need to bring locks. Transportation to and from Habitat worksites will be provided.
